A WEEK IN OBAN

A GOOD BASE FOR MANY TRIPS, INCLUDING ISLANDS

Day trips to 6 islands – The ferry is 4 minutes walk from the apartment.

Mainland coast and mountain walks.

Great for fishing.

Indoor Activities – Distillery, cinema/theatre, concert hall, pubs/restaurant, sea life centre, galleries, shops.

Islands You Can Visit In A Day From Oban:

KERRERA – 5 minutes on the ferry (£4 return), every half hour. Excellent 3 hour walk. No cars. Castle. Café.

MULL – 40 minutes on the ferry (£6.90 return). Connecting bus service on Mull. Time to walk up Ben More, visit Tobermory or Iona. Torosay and Duart castles just by ferry.

LISMORE – 40 minutes on the ferry (£4.80 return). Great mountain views to mainland. Walks. Archaeology.

ISLE OF SEIL – 20 minute drive from Oban. Cross the only bridge over the Atlantic to Seil (free). Visit the conservation village of Ellanabeich and Easdale Island adjacent. Continue to drive through Seil for 5-10 minutes and get ferry (with or without car) to ISLE OF LUING.

COLL AND TIREE – special day trips including coach tour of the islands as well as free time (£30 for Coll and £39 for Tiree)

COLONSAY – you need to stay one night (camp, hostel, B&B, hotel) - 2 hours on ferry (£19.50 return) – worth it for the stunning beaches and gardens. Walk or cycle all over island.

Some Mainland Trips From Oban:

Benderloch Beach and Ben Lora – 15 minutes north of Oban. Long sandy beach; look down on beach and way beyond from Ben Lora.

Ben Cruachan – 30 minute drive from Oban, near Loch Awe. Walk up this Munro or visit interior and learn about hydro power.

Ganavan Sands to Dunstaffnage Castle – 1.5 miles from Oban. Walk over cliffs with great views to Mull and visit the castle (about 2.5 hours).

Kimelford Hill Lochs – 30 minute drive south of Oban. Walk or fish with sea views.

Loch Etive Cruise – for views of Glencoe mountains. Boat trips from Taynault (15 mins drive from Oban).

Port Appin – 30 minute drive north of Oban. Pretty village and good pub. Gardens. Walks. Famous Castle Stalker. Alternative short (5 mins) ferry route to Lismore island.
